Containers of Waste

Driving down a local ring road of a large Canadian City, I was struck by a large stack of sea going shipping containers. The sign that was both large and worrisome stated that these containers were for sale. Why?

Shipping containers that are made of steel, these are not cheap one ton of steel it has been reported uses six tonnes of water in its manufacture. Regardless of the veracity of this figure the situation is that there sits a huge pile of shipping containers from overseas. Who made these containers? Why are they not being reused, this question is a critical one in my view.

What are the containers shipping and from where? The common perception is that they are coming from China, if this is the case then who is fronting the cost of tons of steel to ship, what sort of goods? Are these the trinkets that fill the dollar stores? Are they the plasma screen tv's that fill future shop? regardless of their cargo the fact that they sit in piles not only in canadian cities but also ports around the world is rather troubling.
